Diego Rivera (1886-1957) es una figura de peso en el escenario histórico del arte. Con firmes principios políticos y una turbulenta historia de amor, fue al mismo tiempo esposo y paladín de Frida Kahlo, defensor y enemigo de la Unión Soviética de Stalin, y libertador y traidor de León Trotsky. Las pinturas de Rivera, de vivos colores, gráficas y a menudo monumentales, tienen la misma carga apasionada y política que la biografía personal del autor. Fusionando influencias europeas, como el cubismo, con una ideología socialista y una exaltación del legado popular e indígena de México, creó una nueva iconografía para la historia del arte y para su país. Se convirtió en una de las figuras más importantes del movimiento mural mexicano y se ganó el reconocimiento internacional por sus pinturas murales en edificios públicos en las que presentaba una visión utópica, aunque accesible, de un México posrevolucionario. En 1931, Rivera fue el protagonista de la segunda exposición monográfica de la historia del MoMA. Este libro estudia la combinación única de influencias e ideologías que convierte a Rivera en un pintor único y universal, ligado a la historia especialmente turbulenta del México de principios del siglo XX, y preocupado, a su vez, por temas como la revolución y la desigualdad de clases, que siguen siendo candentes en la actualidad. Sobre el autor Andrea Kettenmann (nacida en 1959) estudió historia del arte en Giessen, Gotinga y Hamburgo, y más tarde se incorporó al departamento de historia del arte de la Universidad de Hamburgo. En 1986 visitó México con una beca, donde ahora vive y trabaja como historiadora del arte autónoma. Ha participado en un sinnúmero de exposiciones y catálogos.
