En una fría noche de noviembre, Guido Brunetti recibe una llamada de su colega, el ispettore Vianello, alertándole de que se ha visto una mano en uno de los canales de Venecia. Pronto se encuentra el cuerpo y se asigna a Brunetti la investigación del asesinato de este inmigrante indocumentado. Dado que no existe un registro oficial de la presencia del hombre en Venecia, se ve obligado a utilizar fuentes de información mucho más suculentas en la ciudad: los chismes y los recuerdos de las personas que conocieron a la víctima.
