El 15 de noviembre de 1959, en un pueblecito de Kansas, los cuatro miembros de la familia Clutter fueron salvajemente asesinados en su casa. Los crímenes eran aparentemente inmotivados, y no se encontraron claves que permitieran identificar a los asesinos. Cinco años, cuatro meses y veintinueve días más tarde, el 14 de abril de 1965, Dick Hickcock y Perry Smith fueron ahorcados como culpables de las muertes en la penitenciaría del estado de Kansas. A partir de estos hechos, y tras realizar largas y minuciosas investigaciones con los protagonistas reales de la historia, Truman Capote dio un vuelco a su carrera de narrador y escribió A sangre fría, la novela que le consagró definitivamente como uno de los grandes de la literatura norteamericana del siglo XX.
