Azotados por vientos implacables y sumidos en noches eternas, los montes de Kolima se encuentran en uno de los parajes más inhóspitos del planeta. Ya convertido en uno de los más destacados referentes del modernismo hispánico, el joven Juan Ramón compuso una ingente cantidad de textos en prosa que irá reservando en sus archivos. La aparición de Platero y yo en 1914 da buena cuenta de la calidad de estas prosas, escritas en su mayor parte durante su retiro en Moguer entre 1906 y 1912, pero no será este gran libro un logro único ni aislado. Nacen en paralelo dos extensos poemarios que titulará Baladas para despues y Odas libres, conjunto este último que más tarde sumará a Odas castas bajo el generico epígrafe Odas.

Bartleby, el escribiente es un magnífico y conmovedor relato, cuya lectura resulta inquietante, divertida y perturbadora. Su protagonista, un peculiar copista judicial que trabaja en un despacho de abogados en Nueva York, decide un buen día, para sorpresa de su jefe, negarse a seguir copiando con la famosa frase «preferiría no hacerlo». Aún hoy, la motivación de Bartleby sigue siendo un exquisito misterio literario, pero la determinación y la sosegada delicadeza con la que se atreve a decir «no» hará que pase a la posteridad como un hombre que eligió la libertad. Herman Melville creó así un personaje paradigmático que influyó notablemente en autores posteriores y que se ha convertido en referente en la historia de la literatura.

Conmemoramos el bicentenario del nacimiento de Melville con la edición de una de sus obras más célebres que incluye, además, una introducción de Enrique Vila-Matas. «Preferiría no hacerlo -repetí yo como si fuera su eco, levantándome muy alterado y cruzando la habitación de una zancada-. ¿Qué quiere decir?» Considerada una obra maestra de la narración corta, Bartleby, el escribiente constituye una pieza anticipatoria de la literatura existencialista y del absurdo. A través del protagonista, un escribiente que se enfrenta a las demandas de la realidad con una inquietante respuesta, «preferiría no hacerlo», el estoicismo, la ironía, el humor y el sordo desasosiego alegórico presente en la obra del Melville se aúnan para expresar la obstinación del ser humano en su afán de obtener respuesta a las grandes preguntas o, al menos, seguir buscándolas. Esta edición presenta una traducción de María José Chulia y una brillante introducción de Enrique Vila-Matas, que reflexiona sobre esta historia que tiene un claro paralelismo con Kafka y ha influenciado a autores como Beckett, Camus, Gombrowicz o el mismo Vila-Matas.
