Desde su publicación en 1945, American-Spanish Syntax ha suscitado un profundo interés no solo en el ámbito de los estudios sobre la variación del español en América, sino también entre la crítica de la notable producción literaria hispanoamericana. El propósito de Charles E. Kany al concebir esta obra fue, como él mismo declaró, reunir las tendencias más destacadas de la sintaxis en esta variedad, con especial referencia a los usos populares, que explica y describe en cuanto a su delimitación social y geográfica.
