Desde su publicación en 1945, American-Spanish Syntax ha suscitado un profundo interés no solo en el ámbito de los estudios sobre la variación del español en América, sino también entre la crítica de la notable producción literaria hispanoamericana. El propósito de Charles E. Kany al concebir esta obra fue, como él mismo declaró, reunir las tendencias más destacadas de la sintaxis en esta variedad, con especial referencia a los usos populares, que explica y describe en cuanto a su delimitación social y geográfica. Para su elaboración, extrajo ejemplos de autores relevantes del siglo XX, de materiales, literatura regional y obras lexicográficas, cuyos datos contrastó personalmente, tanto en sus viajes a distintos países americanos como mediante el cotejo con informantes orales. Es la primera obra de este tipo, e iluminó el trabajo de investigadores, estudiantes y profesores de español, en una época en la que los estudios sobre el español americano estaban aún en ciernes. La excelente acogida de este trabajo llevó a su autor a realizar una segunda edición corregida y aumentada, para la que contó con nuevos corresponsales de la talla del chileno Luis Cifuentes García, el paraguayo Marcos A. Morínigo, el boliviano Antonio Díaz Villamil o el insigne Ángel Rosenbalt (Argentina y Venezuela).
