En el antiguo Egipto existieron muchos oficios y profesiones. Gracias al arte, la arqueología y los textos podemos conocer cómo era el trabajo de agricultores y ganaderos, pero también de escribas, sacerdotes, embalsamadores, soldados, artistas... todo el universo de los oficios que constituían la base de esta fascinante sociedad.

En la antigua Grecia, el ocio era la aspiración máxima de cualquier persona, y los ciudadanos solo trabajaban por necesidad, pues normalmente asistían a la Asamblea o los tribunales y dejaban los trabajos manuales a los metecos o los esclavos. Pero si había que trabajar, el ideal griego de vida era el del campesino, a pesar de ser un oficio durísimo. Además de campesinos, había médicos, soldados, políticos, arquitectos, artesanos o maestros, entre otras muchas ocupaciones.
