La Castafiore anuncia su llegada a Moulinsart, y el capitán intenta huir de viaje a toda prisa, pero tropieza con un escalón roto que aún no han venido a arreglar y se rompe los ligamentos. Nace el rumor de una relación sentimental entre la cantante y el ?viejo lobo de mar? y se llena todo de paparazzis. Y desaparecen las joyas... En este álbum no hay viajes ni grandes aventuras, y ahí está la gracia de Hergé para conseguir mantener la intriga. Toda la acción sucede en Moulinsart, dentro y en los jardines y alrededores del castillo. Según nos cuenta el mismo Hergé: ?Al empezar este álbum, mi intención era también la de simplificar, la de entrenarme a narrar, esta vez, una historia en la que no pasase nada, sin recurrir al exotismo. Simplemente para ver si era capaz de mantener al lector en vilo hasta el final?.

El tráfico de esclavos es el eje del argumento de esta aventura, y como casi siempre, Tintín y el capitán se ven involucrados por una serie de casualidades. Este álbum es una especie de continuación de Tintín en el país del Oro Negro y en él resurgen un gran número de personajes aparecidos en episodios anteriores.

Después de dos años de ausencia en los que ha viajado a Perú y Bolivia, la expedición etnográfica Sanders-Hardmuth regresa a Europa habiendo descubierto varias tumbas incas. Se han traído la momia del inca Rascar Capac, también llamado «el que desencadena fuego del cielo», que llevaba puestas valiosas joyas de oro macizo. Al cabo de poco tiempo, todos los participantes de la expedición van cayendo víctimas de un mal misterioso, y siempre que eso ocurre son hallados los fragmentos de una pequeñas bolas de cristal.
