The Kisokaido route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country’s then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaido journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838.

The world appears to be divided into cat and dog lovers, but fortunately Walter Chandoha, the 20th century’s greatest pet photographer found himself happily in the middle. «Cuando se habla de la República Dominicana se habla del trópico, el Caribe, las Antillas, la música, la bandera, las playas, los campos, el folklore, las casas típicas, de la comida, de la gente, del arte; en esencia, se habla de color. Todo el que nace en esta tierra lleva ese color particular que delata ante el mundo de dónde venimos y hacia dónde vamos. Para mí, ese color que todos llevamos es una pieza clave para la búsqueda y exaltación de nuestra identidad. Desde muy pequeños somos partícipes de ese color, nos vemos arropados de todos esos elementos en cada rincón: es imposible escapar de él. Lo vemos en las viviendas rurales, en nuestras calles, en un amanecer, en la gente que nos rodea, en nuestro ritmo, en el mismo merengue y en nuestras tradiciones y costumbres.
Así nace para mí nuestro proyecto, República del Color, de esa búsqueda y rescate de nuestra identidad visto de la óptica de nuestras artes plásticas. Strip work led him to the infamous EC Comics, then to oils for Tarzan and Conan pulp covers. Both characters were interpreted by many before him, but as he explained in the 1970s, “I’m very physical minded. In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him,” and he used this first-hand knowledge of muscle and macho to redefine fantasy heroes as more massive, more menacing, more testosterone-fueled than anything seen before. As counterbalance he created a new breed of women, nude as censorship allowed, with pixie faces and multiparous bodies: thick thighed, heavy buttocked, breasts cantilevered out to there, yet still, with their soft bellies and hints of cellulite, believably real. Add in the action, the creatures, the twilit worlds of haunting shadow and Frazetta’s art is addictive as potato chips.

Tras los libros de Paulino Viota sobre Ford y Godard, aparecidos en esta misma colección, ha llegado el momento de homenajear al autor y hombre de cine en su faceta de profesor, un docente carismático, divertido, profundo, que penetra junto a sus alumnos en la historia del cine como en un refugio cotidiano desde el que contemplar el mundo y afilar la imaginación. Se transcriben aquí (salvando, en la medida de lo posible, la singularidad de la palabra y la teatralidad de los gestos de aquel contexto privilegiado) las cinco clases de un curso de 2012 sobre la teoría del cine de Eisenstein impartido en la Filmoteca de Santander, en las que asistimos a la paulatina clarificación del complejo pensamiento de uno de los mayores cineastas que han existido, a su vez principal teórico del montaje desde sus posibilidades rítmicas, plásticas y orgánicas, a sus capacidades relacionales, afectivas e intelectuales. Pero El genio de Eisenstein es mucho más que el trazo de un curso o la memoria compartida de la enseñanza de un experto, ya que Viota, para paliar la ausencia de las proyecciones de fragmentos fílmicos que interrumpían el flujo de las explicaciones, ha completado un exigente apartado de análisis y descripciones (que diseccionan los momentos álgidos de la obra del director de El acorazado Potemkin o las secuencias de otras películas traídas a colación, como el inolvidable «camino hasta el beso» de Recuerda de Hitchcock), lo que supone su mayor aportación hasta la fecha a la obra del venerado artista soviético.

MUY DE LA CASA. LOS ACTORES DE MI VIDA
Puede que la mayor tragedia en el campo del cine de la inveterada costumbre española de vivir de espaldas a Portugal haya sido el escaso interés por una de las personalidades más destacadas de la cinefilia del siglo XX, João Bénard da Costa, quien desde la Gulbenkian primero y, especialmente luego, como factótum de la Cinemateca transformaría para siempre la cultura cinematográfica de su país, en sintonía con la revolución moderna de Langlois en Francia. Así, como su maestro, pensó la programación de cine como una bella arte, en parte juego intelectual, en parte fuente de iluminaciones y transmisión de conocimiento: la puesta en contigüidad de películas e ideas que establecen linajes, dialécticas o extravíos rizomáticos donde se abolen las jerarquías entre alta y baja cultura.
