The Kisokaido route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country’s then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaido journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838.

The world appears to be divided into cat and dog lovers, but fortunately Walter Chandoha, the 20th century’s greatest pet photographer found himself happily in the middle. He loved these intriguing creatures equally for their unique beauty and individualism, and as subjects to photograph in a career spanning over 70 years. While working on his critically acclaimed TASCHEN book Cats, Chandoha handpicked his favorite dog photos for a potential follow-up title, putting into carefully marked boxes hundreds of contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies, many unseen for at least 50 years, and some totally unseen.
Chandoha sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 98, but his legacy lives on in this dashing sequel dedicated to man’s best friend. “Walter Chandoha’s photographs of dogs are compelling not just because dogs have an inherent charm, but because the person behind the camera was a master of his craft,” writes the photography critic Jean Dykstra in the book’s introduction.

The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content.
Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He then increasingly turned to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Rather than idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the issues of his day, addressing the horrors of religious warfare and taking a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions.

Add in the action, the creatures, the twilit worlds of haunting shadow and Frazetta’s art is addictive as potato chips.

Esta ambiciosa obra es una revisión fundamental de la música clásica compuesta en el siglo XX. Su autor afirma que fueron las tres grandes guerras que tuvieron lugar en él las que conformaron su historia. Desde esta perspectiva, Mauceri indaga en los motivos por los que se han añadido tan escasas obras al canon musical desde 1930, examinando las diferentes trayectorias de los grandes compositores que, tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, desarrollaron una voz tan única como versátil, pero con una vocación más popular. Asimismo, defiende que el destino de los compositores durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial estuvo inextricablemente unido a los propósitos políticos de sus respectivos gobiernos. Ello derivó en acontecimientos tan significativos como la desaparición de la música experimental en Alemania, Italia y Rusia; el éxodo de numerosos compositores a Estados Unidos y la repentina recuperación de la música experimental lo que Mauceri llama «la vanguardia institucional», entendida como la lengua franca de la música clásica occidental durante la Guerra Fría.

En 1975 se reunieron en un solo libro los principales artículos publicados por André Bazin en la prensa especializada, con el respaldo de Jeanine Bazin y François Truffaut.
