The first international monograph of one of the most exciting painters working in Brazil today, Marina Perez Simão. Marina Perez Simão (1981–) is an internationally recognized contemporary artist who uses a variety of techniques, such as collage, drawing, watercolor, and oil painting, as starting points to combine interior and exterior landscapes. She composes visual journeys that sometimes traverse the unknown, the abstract, and the nebulous, but which also include visions and memories.   Simão’s work is held in several public collections worldwide, including the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, in Saint-Étienne, France; the Ekard Collection in the Netherlands; the Samdani Art Foundation in Bangladesh; the Sifang Art Museum in China; the Speed Art Museum in Kentucky; and the Dallas Museum of Art, among others.

In 1952, after becoming one of the first-ever recipients of a Master of Science degree in Photography at Chicago’s Institute of Design, native New Yorker Marvin E. Newman returned to his hometown. Like many artists before, he set about chronicling the city. Unlike his predecessors, Newman chose color photography as the preeminent medium for capturing the people and energy of New York, and its emergence in the 1950s as the self-proclaimed “Greatest City in the World.”

The work of Henri Matisse (1869–1954) reflects an ongoing belief in the power of brilliant colors and simple forms. Though famed in particular for his paintings, Matisse also worked with drawing, sculpture, lithography, stained glass, and collage, developing his unique cut-out medium when old age left him unable to stand and paint. Matisse’s subjects were often conventional: nudes, portraits, and figures in landscapes, Oriental scenes, and interior views, but in his handling of bold color and fluid draftsmanship, he secured his place as a 20th-century master. It was Matisse’s palette that particularly thrilled the modern imagination. With vivid blue, amethyst purple, egg-yolk yellow, and many shades beyond he liberated his work from a meticulous representation of reality and sought instead a “vital harmony,” often referring to music as an inspiration or analogy for his work. A comprehensive and informative source, this lavishly illustrated publication has been revised in close collaboration with the Matisse estate. Including preparatory studies, full-page reproductions, and enlarged details, discover the artist's adventurous path, from the chromatic brilliance of his Fauve period, right through to his invention of gouache cut-outs at the ripe age of 80. Max Ernst (1891-1976) transformó todo lo que tocó con una originalidad artística sin igual.
