1961, three years after meeting Jeanne-Claude in Paris, Christo made a study of a mammoth project that would wrap one of the city’s most emblematic monuments. 60 years, 25,000 square meters of recyclable fabric, and 3,000 meters of rope later, the artists' vision finally came true. Discover their posthumous installation with this book gathering photography, drawings, and a history of the project's making. Like most of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work, L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped is temporary and runs for 16 days from Saturday, September 18 to Sunday, October 3, 2021. Carried out in close collaboration with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the historic structure is wrapped in recyclable polypropylene fabric in silvery blue and recyclable red rope.

«Santo Domingo vino a ser el ombligo de la conquista. De sus casas y solares partieron expediciones y héroes de buena y mala vida. Salieron: Alonso de Ojeda, (1466-1515), militar, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, (1475-1519), hidalgo, Juan de la Cosa, (1449-1510), cartógrafo, los que buscaron éxito y fortuna, todos partiendo de la boca del río Ozama. Pero vivieron en Santo Domingo, y en palacios reales o casi reales, Diego Colón, el Adelantado Rodrigo de Bastidas (1445-1527), otro hidalgo: Diego Caballero, Francisco Tostado de la Peña, poeta (+1586); y en sus salas y mentideros nació también la lucha del desconocido extremeño quien llegó a América para buscar nombradía y fama, y con la finalidad de alcanzar, por fuerza y acción propia, posición social, limpiando muchas veces el nombre familiar desconocido en la península. Estos monumentos, tal como hemos dicho anteriormente, "son palabras y frases dichas en piedras talladas". Son el modelo del primer cambio social producido por la implantación de la cultura europea en tierras americanas. Hemos de preservar este trozo de historia, como hasta hoy, y desde luego, hemos de recalcar que un monumento es historia coagulada; la historia presentada como resultado de hechos, buenos y malos, que aún palpitan, consolidados por los documentos y los siglos de investigación, y que éstos son la biografía del pasado que envuelven la vida de los monumentos coloniales en Santo Domingo.» Marcio Veloz Maggiolo
