La Comedia humana, en la que intervienen hasta dos mil personajes, constituye un ambicioso estudio de las costumbres de la sociedad francesa del Primer Imperio, de la Restauración, tras la caída de Napoleón Bonaparte, y de la Monarquía de Julio. En ella se dan cita todas las pasiones humanas, través de un rico mosaico de relatos y novelas en el que Balzac despliega su portentosas dotes de narrador para desarrollar lo que denominó “dramas de la vida íntima” en entornos y escenarios variados, manteniendo la unidad argumental mediante la reaparición de determinados personajes en distintas novelas. Además de un vasto fresco de la sociedad de la época, en su gran obra Balzac muestra una concepción de la vida basada en la generosidad y los ideales.
