El presente y espléndido bestiario es el primer libro de poesía escrito por Guillaume Apollinaire, publicado en 1911. Los treinta pequeños poemitas –que normalmente siguen la sencilla forma del quatrain (cuarteta), casi siempre con rima alterna o pareada– van acompañados de otras treinta extraordinarias xilografías del pintor Raoul Dufy, artista de tendencia fundamentalmente fauvista que aquí adopta un estilo fuertemente clásico. Este «sencillo divertimento poético», en palabras del propio Apollinaire, da cabida entre sus páginas a animales poco habituales en los bestiarios: la mosca, el saltamontes, la oruga o el cangrejo, ejecutados siempre con enorme maestría.
