La presente edición reúne la poesía de Stefan Zweig cuya autoría no admite dudas. Se incluyen las dos colecciones independientes que publicó en vida: Cuerdas de plata y Las coronas tempranas. Zweig reunió lo mejor de su poesía en Nuevos viajes, que incluía poemas nuevos, inéditos o publicados en revistas y que también hemos incluido en nuestra edición, elaborada a partir de la preparada por Richard Friedenthal.  Como tantos otros compañeros de generación, Stefan Zweig vivió atrapado entre dos mundos: la pacífica Viena del cambio de siglo —destilación de sucesivas décadas de ilustración y humanismo— y la Europa destrozada por las dos guerras mundiales, el fanatismo nacionalista y la intolerancia. El escritor plasmó este contraste funesto en sus célebres memorias El mundo de ayer, cúspide de una obra dedicada a la narrativa, con un evidente sabor decimonónico, y al infatigable impulso de divulgar la obra y las vidas de grandes personalidades. Pero si en su narrativa y en las memorias reflejó la atmósfera y el ambiente del mundo perdido de su juventud, fue en la poesía donde concentró sus primeros años creativos, derivando luego en la traducción de clásicos franceses. Los dos libros que se publican en este volumen, escritos a lo largo de cinco años, suponen un ejercicio literario notable, en la estela de la poesía publicada por Rilke y Stefan George en el periodo encantador que va del final del Romanticismo al arranque de las vanguardias, pero con la particularidad de haber preservado la atmósfera y el espíritu de aquellos años, todavía intocados por la guerra.

Dante Alighieri (1265-13211 es considerado el máximo poeta de la lengua italiana, y su figura y su obra, así como sus aportaciones a los campos del pensamiento y la literatura, son fundamentales dentro de toda la cultura europea posterior. Miembro activo de la política de su tiempo, murió exiliado de su patria, Florencia. Fue una de las primeras y más importantes figuras del Renacimiento italiano.
