Cuenta Conan Doyle en sus memorias que la idea de escribir los relatos de Sherlock Holmes y publicarlos en las populares revistas literarias de la época surgió de una reflexión: “si un personaje lograse captar la atención de un lector y reapareciera en diferentes números de una misma revista, este personaje conseguiría la fidelidad del lector a esa publicación”. La revista elegida para poner a prueba esta teoría fue The Strand Magazine, el momento el número de julio de 1891 y el relato “Escándalo en Bohemia”. El protagonista, un detective llamado Sherlock Holmes, estaba inspirado en Joseph Bell, un profesor de medicina de Conan Doyle para quien cualquier problema que se nos presentase en la vida, científico o no, se podía resolver siguiendo un riguroso método deductivo. A la primera serie de seis relatos publicada por el Strand siguió otra y otra más... Y el éxito alcanzado por este peculiar personaje creció imparable y llega hasta nuestros días.
