Además de ser conocida por sus novelas y crónicas sobre las costumbres sudafricanas, fue una pionera del feminismo y una gran reformadora social antirracista. Seis años después de su muerte, una versión inacabada de esta novela logró ver la luz. Casi un siglo después, el premio Nobel J.M. Coetzee redescubre este gran clásico, inédito hasta ahora en lengua española y, guiado por una profunda admiración por «el genio literario de Schreiner», decide editarlo y añadirle un final acorde a nuestros tiempos.
