Poco se imagina el joven protagonista de esta novela que la chica de la que se ha enamorado está a punto de desaparecer de su vida. Se han conocido durante un concurso entre estudiantes de diferentes institutos, y no pueden verse muy a menudo. En sus encuentros, sentados bajo la glicinia de un parque o paseando a orillas de un río, la joven empieza a hablarle de una extraña ciudad amurallada, situada, al parecer, en otro mundo; poco a poco, ella acaba confesándole su inquietante sensación de que su verdadero yo se halla en esa misteriosa ciudad. De pronto, entrado el otoño, el protagonista recibe una carta de ella que quizá suponga una despedida, y eso lo sume en una profunda tristeza. Tendrán que pasar años antes de que pueda atisbar alguna posibilidad de reencontrarla. Y sin embargo, esa ciudad, tal y como ella la describió, existe. Porque todo es posible en este asombroso universo donde la realidad, la identidad, los sueños y las sombras fluctúan y escapan a los rígidos límites de la lógica.

William Blake poeta, pintor y grabador, nació el 28 de noviembre de 1757 en el barrio londinense de Soho. Expuso sus primeras acuarelas y grabados en 1771, y un año después entró como aprendiz en el taller de grabado de James Basire, donde pasó siete años. Del final de esta estancia data su etapa de simpatías revolucionarias. En 1782 contrajo matrimonio con Catherine Boucher y un año más tarde publicó su primer libro de poemas, Esbozos poéticos, al que siguieron Canciones de Inocencia (1789) y Canciones de Experiencia (1794), en las que expresa su creencia apasionada en la libertad de la imaginación. Esta fe visionaria se plasma de manera exuberante en El matrimonio del Cielo y el Infierno (ca. 1790) y en sus poemas proféticos, entre los que destacan El libro de Thel (1789), Visiones de las hijas de Albión (1793), las «profecías continentales»: América (1793) y Europa (1794), Milton (1804) y Jerusalén (1804- 1818). Blake dio a conocer estos poemas en pequeñas ediciones ilustradas con grabados de hermosa y sorprendente factura. Ignorado por sus contemporáneos, trabajó como grabador profesional hasta su muerte, el 12 de agosto de 1827.

Mafalda es, junto a sus amigos Felipe, Susanita, Manolito, Miguelito y Libertad, un símbolo de nuestra sociedad. Hoy Mafalda sigue invitándonos a pensar, a huir del prejuicio, a amar y a soñar con un mundo mejor, y seguimos acudiendo a ella para conseguir entendernos a nosotros mismos y al loco mundo en que vivimos.

¿Qué sucede cuando Tertuliano Máximo Afonso descubre a los treinta y ocho años que en su ciudad vive un individuo que es su copia exacta y con el que no le une ningún vínculo de sangre? Ése es el interrogante que Saramago, explorando de nuevo las profundidades del alma, plantea en El hombre duplicado. ¿Cómo saber quiénes somos? ¿En qué consiste la identidad? ¿Qué nos define como personas individuales y únicas? ¿Podemos asumir que nuestra voz, nuestros rasgos, hasta la mínima marca distintiva, se repitan en otra persona? ¿Podríamos intercambiarnos con nuestro doble sin que nuestros allegados lo percibiesen?

La cultura en el sentido que tradicionalmente se ha dado a este vocablo esta en nuestros dias a punto de desaparecer. La banalizacion de las artes y la literatura el triunfo del periodismo amarillista y la frivolidad de la politica son sintomas de un mal mayor que aqueja a la sociedad contemporanea: la idea temeraria de convertir en bien supremo nuestra natural propension a divertirnos. En el pasado la cultura fue una especie de conciencia que impedia dar la espalda a la realidad. Ahora actua como mecanismo de distraccion y entretenimiento. La figura del intelectual que estructuro todo el siglo XX hoy ha desaparecido del debate publico. Aunque algunos firmen manifiestos o participen en polemicas lo cierto es que su repercusion en la sociedad es minima. Conscientes de esta situacion muchos han optado por el discreto silencio. Como buen espiritu incomodo Vargas Llosa nos entrega una durisima radiografia de nuestro tiempo y nuestra cultura. Este pequeno ensayo no aspira a abultar el elevado numero de interpretaciones sobre la cultura contemporanea solo a dejar constancia de la metamorfosis que ha experimentado lo que se entendia aun por cultura cuando mi generacion entro a la escuela o a la universidad y la abigarrada materia que la ha sustituido una impostura que parece haberse realizado con facilidad en la aquiescencia general. Hicks McTaggart, a onetime strikebreaker turned private eye, thinks he’s found job security until he gets sent out on what should be a routine case, locating and bringing back the heiress of a Wisconsin cheese fortune who’s taken a mind to go wandering.
