La señorita Arundell, una anciana acaudalada, vive sola con la única compañía de su fiel amigo, su perro Bob. Un día sufre lo que parece ser un desgraciado accidente al caer por las escaleras tras tropezar con la pelotita de goma de su perro, y, aunque sus sobrinos lo achacan a la mala suerte, la anciana está convencida de que alguien ha intentado matarla. Decide por ello escribir una carta a Hércules Poirot para que la ayude a descubrir si sus sospechas son ciertas, pero, sin aparente explicación, la carta llega días más tarde y, para cuando lo hace, la anciana ha fallecido. Poirot decide entonces investigar qué sucedió para que la carta no llegase a su debido tiempo y, lo más importante, si la señorita Arundell estaba en lo cierto y alguien no cesó en su empeño hasta conseguir acabar con su vida.
