En 1905 Lucy Montgomery empezó a escribir la primera de las novelas de un personaje y una serie que la harían famosa mundialmente, Ána de Tejas Verdes. Envió el manuscrito a varios editores, pero todos ellos lo rechazaron, ella un poco decepcionada, guardó el documento. En 1907 volvió a encontrar ese manuscrito, lo releyó e intentó de nuevo su publicación. Los editores de la Page Company of Boston, decidieron publicar la novela en 1908. Se convirtió en un éxito de ventas inmediato, con seis ediciones en seis meses y marcó el inicio de la carrera de Lucy Montgomery como novelista e hizo de ella la autora canadiense más leída. LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY, nació en Clifton (en la actualidad New London) en la isla del Principe Edward, Canadá, el 3o de noviembre de 1874. Su madre murió cuando Lucy tenía sólo veintiún meses de edad, y su padre la dejó a cargo de sus abuelos maternos. Al ser «hija única» que vivía con una pareja mayor, recibió una educación muy estricta, y encontró compañía en su imaginación, en la naturaleza, en los libros y en la escritura. En 1893 y 1894 estudió para conseguir su título de Magisterio. Publicó veinte novelas, quinientos treinta relatos cortos, unos quinientos poemas, treinta ensayos y su autobiografía. El 24 de abril de 1942 fue encontrada muerta en la cama de su casa en Toronto. La causa de la muerte, tal como se registró en el certificado de defunción, fue una trombosis coronaria.
