En 1844, y atribuyéndolo a Juan Clímaco, Kierkegaard había publicado Migajas filosóficas, obra en la que diferenciaba radicalmente la filosofía sistemática con pretensiones absolutas (representada por Hegel) del socratismo, y a este, de la relación única que se produce entre el maestro y los discípulos, tal como se establece en el caso de Cristo y los cristianos. Dos años más tarde, el mismo Juan Clímaco (y su «editor», es decir, Søren Kierkegaard) se vio en la obligación de hacer una serie de apostillas a dicho texto. En ellas profundizaba en los muchos matices del problema de cómo cabe siquiera pensar que la eternidad se relacione con el tiempo, o sea, que Dios y la historia puedan estar de algún modo en contacto y el individuo existente pueda realmente convertirse ya ahora en seguidor de la verdad plena y eterna. La empresa, ciertamente, no puede ser más atrevida: se trata de formular los fundamentos de una ontología existencial donde la libertad y el amor hallen cabida e incluso se conviertan en el núcleo de un nuevo pensamiento antisistemático y mucho más profundo que cualquier intento de sistema.
