En 1868 aceptó el cargo de editora en una revista femenina en la que se encargaba de escribir breves historias, poemas y consejos. Poco después, a petición de sus editores abandonó sus propios proyectos literarios para escribir una historia para «chicas», Mujercitas. En 1869 se publicó la segunda parte: Aquellas mujercitas donde los protagonistas tienen ya una vida adulta. A partir de este momento se iban a solucionar todos los problemas económicos de la familia Alcott, puesto que la novela alcanzó de inmediato un gran éxito.
