Este libro es, ante todo, la puesta en escritura de una historia întelectual archipiélica. Su objeto de estudio son las relaciones intclectuales que cinco escritores de y desde la mitad de isla que ocupa Repablica Dominicana establecieron con sus pares latinoamericanos de Tierra Firme, durante las dos últimas décadas del siglo XIX y las tres primeras del XX. En otras palabras, se trata de un estudio sobre lo que hoy en dia se ha dado en llamar redes intelectuales, tejidas gracias a encuentros cara a cara, viajes, cartas, revistas, sociedades culturales, universidades, editoriales, libros, Medios diversos de religación que, como afirmaba Rubén Dario, permitieron el intercambio, el acercamiento, el diálogo, el conocimiento y el reconocimiento mutuos entre los escritores latinoamericanos de entre siglos. Francisco y Federico Henríquez y Carvajal, Federico García Godoy, Horacio Blanco Fombona y Max Henriquez Ureña son los autores que se examinan en su quehacer religador. En relación y en diálogo con la Tierra Firme de América Latina, estos autores nunca concibieron su insularidad como una separación o un aislamiento; al contrario, la ejercieron como una extensión, una continuidad en el Caribe del continente. Desplegadas bajo este cariz eminentemente archipiélico, sus trayectorias les permitieron hacerse partícipes de procesos que implicaron a toda la región latinoamericana en el tránsito del siglo XIX al XX: desde e surgimiento del intelectual hasta la especialización de sus funciones; desde la construcción de discursos de identidad regional en diálogo con los cuales imaginaron su identidad nacional, hasta la circulación y transferencia de bienes simbólicos entre el Caribe y la América continental en cuyas intersecciones se situaron como destacados mediadores culturales.
