Esta es la crónica de Matías Kovac, un joven de dieciséis años abúlico y marginado que necesita salir de sí mismo. La forma de hacerlo parecen esconderla los diarios que Cristian, su hermano, le lega cuando huye a Barcelona. Kurt Cobain, Nick Cave, Suede y Patti Smith forman, así, una especie de texto sagrado que Matías se empeña en descifrar. Publicada en 2004 después de la crisis económica argentina, parte de la descomposición social y el pesimismo generalizado de la época para dibujar lo frágil de las estructuras familiares y la facilidad de romperlas para siempre. El padre de Matías los abandonó motivado por los pastores evangelistas, su madre yace postrada en la cama noqueada por el efecto de los somníferos y su hermana, Carla, solo se deja ver con un pasamontañas que esconde su rostro, deformado en un intento de suicidio. Barcelona se convierte así en su Ítaca particular, la única vía de escape, que se abre definitivamente cuando cae en sus manos un paquete enorme de cocaína: empieza, entonces, el delirio cruento por el barrio suburbial, descuidado y fantasmal en el que vive. La guita lo lleva a Julián y este a los punkies, que hacen recitales, beben vino de tetrabrik y visten con medias de red corridas. La voluntad de fuga de Matías lo ata más a su drama familiar, pero en el transcurso de la novela se revelan, poco a poco, otras formas de habitar un mundo que parece que no deja de degradarse. «Yo sé que puedo ser distinto, no quiero morirme así», se dice una y otra vez a sí mismo. ¿Podrá desembocar toda esta oscuridad en algún lugar más soleado?
